Daily Emergencies Teach Preparedness Lessons

Hospital Emergency RoomThe kids were outside playing. I had finally gotten into work mode and was in the middle of a business call when screams erupted from the back yard.

A moment later my wife appeared at the sliding glass back door with our 7-year-old son, rushing him in toward the kitchen sink while yelling for someone to grab a towel.

Quickly telling the person on the other end of the call I had to go, then leaping up as I fumbled with the End Call button, I was barely out of my chair at the dining room table before I discovered the problem.

Jacob had cut his hand. Bad.

Prepper 101: Is Hoarding Wrong?

Prepper 101: Is Hoarding Wrong?

Empty Shelves
Some years ago I read on a survival website a note about a large solar flare heading our way.

Knowing the tremendous risks of an EMP, but not fully knowledgable about what kind of solar storms could cause the next Carrington Event, I became Chicken Little.

I literally ran off into the night - to the great consternation of my wife - to purchase as many last-minute supplies as my checking account could handle. I even brought along a backpack to carry some of the supplies home - just in case an EMP knocked out  my truck before I could get back.

The fact I'm writing this today proves I was quite wrong about the magnitude of that incident.

December 21, 2012 – It’s Not the End of the World

Planet Earth
Happy Thanksgiving!

One of MANY things I'm thankful for this year is the world is NOT going to end on December 21, 2012.

Most preppers, including me, aren't concerned with next month's pending date with doomsday. Besides, how would one prep for the actual end of the world, other than getting ready to meet your maker?

Is It Time to Secede?

Is It Time to Secede?

Is it time to secede?
What happens when 47 out of 50 states secede from the United States?

Tens of thousands of "signatures" have been gathered on electronic petitions asking for the right for their state to peaceably withdraw from the union. All but three states have active petitions at last count.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia already weighed in on the issue of secession a few years ago by directly stating "there is no right to secede."

Which Path Have You Chosen?

Which Path Have You Chosen?

Crossroads
Every four years in America we celebrate "the changing of the guard." Or renewal of the same.

Last night our nation voted for more of the same.

Four more years of President Obama.

And not just more of the same in the White House. We also voted to maintain the deadlocked, split Congress status quo: a House controlled by Republicans and a Senate controlled by Democrats.

Which  tells me our country didn't take a single step away from the path towards disaster last night:

Silver Dimes for 10 Cents

Silver Dimes for 10 Cents
A silver dime in your hand is worth multiple dollars in your pocket

A silver dime in your hand is worth
multiple dollars in your pocket

I have some friends excited over the recent dip in silver prices lately. Silver below $30 represents a good buying opportunity for those bullish on silver.

But how would you like to buy actual silver you can hold in your hand for pennies on the dollar?

You can... by keeping an eye on your change and another "sneaky" way I'll share with you in a moment.

3 Modern Prepping Lessons from the Titanic

Titanic Survivors In Lifeboat
Tonight marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

Anyone remotely familiar with the story recognizes much of the tragedy was largely preventable.

Even though the Titanic sank a century ago... there are still important modern prepping lessons to be learned from the disaster.

Here are three big ones...

How About a Socialist Alternative?

How About a Socialist Alternative?
Can you spot the real socialist alternative?

Can you spot the real socialist alternative?

Yesterday as I headed to the polls to vote in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation Presidential primaries, I passed two interesting signs on a primary road I travel frequently.

Strategically placed along this busy road only a few doors apart were a large commercial sign promoting libertarian-leaning GOP candidate Ron Paul and a similarly large handmade sign on cloth promoting an organization called Socialist Alternative next to an Occupy Wall Street "We Are The 99%" sign.

Grid Down Air Purification

Grid Down Air Purification
Holmes True HEPA Air Filter

Air purification (until the power goes out)

My wife suffers from severe dust allergies. Which doesn’t help when I turn our bedroom into a junk collection area as I drop off more and more “stuff” in there to sort through later.

Being a guy, I took the easy way out this Christmas. Instead of cleaning up my mess, I went out and bought the biggest, baddest True-HEPA air purification unit I could find in stock at my local department store and put it under the tree.

It’s a practical thing, you see.
